Record Nearing For Great Lakes Ice

Ice coverage continues to grow over the Great Lakes and now stands at 88.3% as of Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids says the coverage is ahead of last year by about 7% and the peak is expected in the next few weeks.

The all-time record for ice coverage on the lakes was 95% set in 1979.

Lake Huron and Lake Erie at about 96% ice coverage, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Lake Superior is close behind those two with 95% coverage, followed by Lake Michigan with 73% and Lake Ontario with 70%.

Forecasters say the above-normal amount of ice on the Great Lakes will mean another cooler-than-normal summer throughout Michigan and the entire Great Lakes area.
