Local Elections Take Place Today

It’s election day in several Copper Country municipalities.

In the City of Houghton, three candidates are running for the opportunity to fill out the unexpired council term of Dan Salo, who stepped down late last year after giving up full-time residence in the city. The remaining councilors were unable to agree on a replacement, forcing the election. Robyn Johnson, Michael Salmi and Craig Waddell are on the ballot. The winner will occupy the seat until November.

Calumet Village voters will decide whether the village treasurer will be elected by voters, or appointed by the village council.

Lake Linden Village residents will be asked to extend a 1.75 mill tax levy for police and fire protection for five years.

Voters in Spurr Township in Baraga County will be asked to approve a 1.75 mill levy for the next 10 years for a sinking fund for the NICE School District. Money would be used for building construction and maintenance, security improvements and technology upgrades.

Polls will be open until 8:00 this evening.
