Environmental Groups Call For Action In Michigan

A number of environmental groups gathered in Lansing last week to urge legislators to expand use of transit and renewable power, as well as expand controls on oil and natural gas pipelines.

Among the six key subject areas, the group acknowledged the federal government oversees pipelines, but urged the Department of Environmental Quality require the owner of the pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac to go through the bottomlands leasing process to continue operating.

The 30-some groups also sought legislation to expand use of public transit, renewable power and recycling, as well as eliminate spreading manure on frozen ground. And they will push to eliminate the cap on state land purchases.
