Breakwater Credit Union Suffers Card Fraud Attack

Officials at Breakwater Federal Credit Union are promising that none of its members will suffer loss, after a recent card-based fraud attack.

Around 500 cards were compromised. Fraudulent transactions appeared on 147 accounts. The total amount of the fraudulent transactions was estimated to be around $43,139.

Officials say all members with known losses have received their funds back into their accounts. Holders of compromised cards will receive new cards with new numbers.

There will be no monetary loss to the credit union.

An initial investigation indicates the credit union’s core database was not breached, and members’ information remains secure.

Breakwater officials admit it’s unlikely the fraudsters will be located or prosecuted. They’re reviewing security procedures, and encourage anyone with credit or debit cards to guard their numbers carefully.
