“Electronic” Proof Of Insurance Bill Passes House

The Michigan House Thursday passed a measure to allow drivers to present “electronic” proof of insurance during a traffic stop, instead of being required to have a paper copy of it.

The bill is the result of complaints from some insured motorists who say they’re penalized just because they forgot to have their certificate with them.

The measure includes language protecting police from liability if a smart phone or tablet is damaged. It also includes a provision allowing a motorist to immediately email proof of insurance to an officer during a traffic stop.

The bill now goes to the Senate.
