Hancock Council to Discuss Meetings Cutback

Should the Hancock City Council continue to meet twice each month?

Council members will discuss returning to a once-per-month meeting schedule at their first meeting of 2023 this evening. Council rules require only one meeting per month – on the third Wednesday. The frequency was increased several years ago, as the council dealt with several major issues, including the new rental housing code, and a proposed marijuana ordinance. Councilors will also consider whether to continue making their meetings available online.

Tonight’s agenda also includes setting a public hearing regarding the city’s plan to purchase the Houghton County Arena from Houghton County. The Houghton County Board of Commissioners has already agreed to transfer the building for a cost of one dollar. Council members will also consider a raise for the city’s non-union employees.

Tonight’s session begins at 6:00 at City Hall. See the agenda and online access instructions here.
