Detroit School Debt State’s Fault?

Detroit Public Schools Logo FeatureA group of academic, business, government and community leaders in southeast Michigan says you and I should be responsible for the huge debt that the Detroit Public School District has run up. The Coalition for the Future of Detroit Schoolchildren has called on the state to return control of the Detroit Public Schools to its elected board, and assume the district’s debt. The coalition’s report says the district’s “deficits and debt have ballooned” in the past 15 years. Since the district has operated under some form of state oversight for 10 of those years, they say the state should be liable for the debt, which has grown to more than two-billion dollars. Governor Rick Snyder says his administration will review the recommendations.
