In high school baseball yesterday…
• Calumet and L’Anse split their doubleheader. The Purple Hornets won the first game 8-7, despite getting only two hits. Coach Chad Cichosz said the rest of the runs came on combinations of walks and errors. For L’Anse, Dean Magaraggia pitched three innings, giving up five runs on four hits. Blake Harden pitched 2 two innings, giving up two runs on two hits, and striking out three. The Copper Kings took the nightcap 3-1. Logan Dusinki drove home Blake Harden with the Hornets’ only run.

In softball yesterday…
• Hancock won the Copper Ball, sweeping Calumet 15-5 and 6-5. For the Bulldogs, Sadie Biekkola struck out five to pick up the win in game one. Kaisa Salani and Ella Storm each had three hits and Ellie Heinonen and Brooke Koskela had two hits apiece. Helen Beiring had two hits for Calumet. Sydnie Scholie was the winning pitcher in game two. Biekkola had two hits for Hancock. Bella Coppo had a home run and three hits total and Lena Myhren, Ashlee Johnson, and Beiring each had two hits for the Copper Kings.
• Houghton took both games at Iron Mountain, 14-2 and 17-6. The Gremlins opened game one with an 11-run first inning. Estella Soumis tossed a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 10, and walking just two. Brynn Arko and Fayah Zapolnik homered. In the nightcap, Clea Ollanketo had five hits, including two triples. Kenzie Collard had four hits. Grace Brunet pitched seven innings, striking out 13.

At the Hancock Bulldog Invitational at the Lake Linden track yesterday…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City won the girls meet. Coach Ben Tampas reports that it’s the first girls meet victory in school history. The Blue Bolts won just one event – the 4×200 relay – but were competitive enough across the board to nose out second-place Lake Linden-Hubbell. Hancock finished third, followed by Baraga, Calumet, Ontonagon, Bessemer, Ironwood and Chassell. Lake Linden’s Emily Jokela won the 200 and 400-meter runs, and the 300-meter hurdles. Abi Codere of the Lakes won the pole vault and the 100-meter hurdles. Bessemer’s Natalie Stone won the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Calumet’s Caitlyn Strom won the high jump and the long jump.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell claimed the men’s title, with Bessemer second. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was third, followed by Calumet, Ironwood, Ontonagon, Hancock, Chassell, Jeffers and Baraga. Amos Norland of the Blue Bolts took the 800 and 1600-meter runs.

The NHL Draft lottery was held last night, positioning those teams that didn’t make the playoffs. The Red Wings will have the ninth pick, which is where they were seeded. The Blackhawks will pick first.
MLB
The Tigers cruised to a 6-2 victory over the Guardians last evening. Joey Wentz turned in his best start of the season, pitching into the sixth, and giving up two runs on three hits. Andy Ibáñez hit his first home run as a Tiger, and Riley Greene had two hits.
The Tigers continue that series at Cleveland tonight. Michael Lorenzen will start against Shane Bieber. Coverage will begin at 5:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers pounded the Dodgers 9-3 last evening. Freddy Peralta gave up a run on three hits over six innings. Joey Weimer and Willy Adames homered.
The Brewers host the Dodgers again tonight. Eric Lauer will start against Noah Syndergaard.
