Former Village of Laurium Police Chief Dies at 61

The Village of Laurium’s former chief of police Robert Kyllonen has died at the age of 61. Kyllonen passed away on Sunday in Marquette at UP Health Systems. Kyllonen served Laurium’s police department until 2022 when he retired from his post as police chief. He served a 30-year law enforcement career, having also served the Lake Linden Police Department, Calumet Police Department, and the Houghton County Sheriff. Kyllonen also served his community as an EMT for Mercy Ambulance for several years. Kyllonen grew up in the Copper Country having attended Hancock High School, and graduated from Soumi College with a degree in criminal justice.
