No Injuries Reported in Single Vehicle Crash on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge

No one was injured in a single-vehicle accident on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge Saturday. In the morning a black SUV hauling a mint green pontoon boat traveling north on US-41 was wedged under the Lift Bridge’s cover. Hancock police say the incident occurred because the driver misjudged the clearance needed for travel. Vehicles passing under the Portage Lake Lift Bridge when in the upper position have a height limitation of 14 feet. Hancock Police report that northbound traffic did experience traffic delays while the vehicle was removed. Those traveling with camper trailers or hauling large boats taller than 14 feet should contact the Portage Lake Lift Bridge operator to have the bridge placed in the correct position. You can reach the Michigan Department of Transportation Superior Region Office at 906 786 1800.
