Aging in Place and Universal Design Presentation Tonight

Approximately 23.2 percent of people in the western Upper Peninsula are 65 or over.   A recent AARP survey found that 77% of older Americans want to age in place; that is, to live in their own home safely, independently, and comfortably.  AARP’s HomeFit program is designed to help people live comfortably by taking a room-by-room approach to age-friendly home modifications. Karen Kafantaris has helped to pioneer these AARP efforts.  Working with an occupational therapist on the principles of universal design. Universal Design is the composition of a home environment that aids accessibility, understands and  is used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. In Michigan, the Department of Health & Human Services has prioritized  ensuring that Michiganders can age in their homes and communities for as long as possible while continuing to contribute to the economy and live healthy lives. Join AARP at 5:30 pm for the aging-in-place HomeFit Workshop, either from your home or at the Portage Lake District Library.
