Area’s last collegiate graduation ceremony is Friday

Gogebic Community College will host a virtual ceremony Friday night to honor its graduating class. Nearly 175 people will be recognized from the school’s Ironwood and Portage Township campuses. Seventy-nine of those are doing so with a GPA of 3.50 or above.

GCC’s plans are somewhere in between what Finlandia and Michigan Tech had last week. The Lions were able to get together as a full class at Hirvonen Hall, but without family present. MTU went with a last walk through campus where some faculty and administration officials offered congratulations in an outdoor setting. Director of Student Outreach and Engagement, Dayle Jackson, says that an online ceremony isn’t what the school was hoping for this year, but the full graduation experience is still possible in the future.

Students are all welcome next year. We’re hoping obviously that it is in-person. If they are graduating this year, they are more than welcome to be back on our campus and be part of our ceremony for next year as well, so they get that experience of walking across the stage, and taking those pictures with their family, if they’d like to come back.

This year’s student speaker is Rylee Nicoletti who will be going on to Minnesota-Duluth for a degree in health care administration. The ceremony originates from Ironwood, which is in the Central Time Zone. It begins at 6:00 PM.
