Art Auction Raised Over $21,000 for Houghton Michigan Skatepark

Houghton, Michigan – It was shoulder to shoulder at the Keweenaw Brewing Company on April 13 for a unique art auction fundraiser in support of the Houghton Michigan Skatepark. Fifty-nine local artists created the artwork using the wood decks of skateboards as their canvasses.

Alex Aho, a driving force behind the Skatepark initiative, was overwhelmed by the response. “Community support for the Skatepark has been great since day one. With over $21,000 raised in one night, the community continues to outdo itself.”

The skateboard decks were donated by Quincy Woodwrights, and Rhythm Bike & Board Co. served as a drop-off point for art leading up to the event. Along with great beer and fantastic art, the crowd enjoyed music provided by Bob Hiltunen and Duncan Price.

The current fundraising campaign, launched Monday, April 10th, is focused on raising at least $50,000 locally to earn the additional $50,000 MEDC matching grant. This would fulfill all funds needed to complete the First Phase of the park this summer. Any monies they can raise over and above the required $50,000 can be earmarked for future additions to the park. The Herman Gundlach Fund at KCF kicked off the matching gift campaign with a contribution of $5,000. Adding to that the funds raised at the art auction, the campaign is already over half way to its goal!

Direct donations should be made on the Houghton Michigan Skatepark page on the crowdfunding site Patronicity. The crowdfunding deadline is June 9, 2017. Houghton Michigan Skatepark appreciates the enthusiasm, generosity and support of the community thus far. This current fundraising push and continued support will allow the Skatepark’s first phase to be built this summer.
