Baraga County Fair going with three-day schedule

Baraga County will be taking over management of several ORV trails. At last night’s county board meeting, commissioner Lyle Olson said that control is being transferred from the private group MI-TRALE to the Baraga County Trails Commission.

They are giving us the Twin Lakes trail, the Covington trail, and the trail that goes out to Big Eric’s Bridge. It’s just a matter of getting paperwork signed and those trails will be Baraga County’s.

Olson also said work continues on developing a trail that would directly connect L’Anse to Baraga.

Board members also heard that this year’s Baraga County Fair will resume its typical three-day schedule, August 6th, 7th and 8th. Earlier this spring, the fair board had announced a cut-back to two days. The board approved a bid from Bianco Plumbing and Heating to replace shower heads at the county jail for $5,295.

No applications were received for an open position on the Department of Health and Human Services board. Anyone interested in serving should contact county clerk Wendy Goodreau. The board went on record against a proposal being promoted by state senate majority leader Mike Shirkey that would privatize mental health services. Commissioner Dan Robillard recognized that changes need to be made.

The jail system doesn’t work for mental health patients, but being privatized, I think this is just a scapegoat on the local agencies again.

The board also endorsed a resolution opposing the concept of a “vaccination passport.”
