Brian Irizarry Named New Mayor of Houghton

Houghton’s city council will continue to look similar as it has over the last year. Each of the four councilors that ran for re-election this past week, won back their seats. While the councilors are still made up of Brian Irizarry, Jan Cole, Joan Suits, Craig Waddell, Bob Backon, Robert McGowen, and Mike Needham, there is a new mayor in the city. Brian Irrizarry was nominated to the position by Councilor Joan Suits and seconded by Jan Cole. Bob Backon was re-nominated for his role of mayor by Mike Needham. Backon’s nomination was seconded by Councilor Robert McGowen. Irizarry was elected to Mayor of Houghton by his fellow council members, narrowly beating out former mayor, Bob Backon. Councilor Joan Suits will serve Houghton as Mayor Pro-Tem. The Council went on to request that City Clerk Ann Vollrath draft a few changes and updates to the council’s rules of procedure. Vollrath will present the draft at the November 30th regular council meeting.
