Calumet Wins Hockey Tourney Opener – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School
The high school hockey tournament opened last night with a matchup between the Great Lakes Conference co-titlists, and it was Calumet that advanced with a 2-1 victory over defending state champion Hancock. The Bulldogs had the edge early, as Jakob Vettori’s shot from the blue line early in the second period gave them the lead. The Copper Kings tied it a few minutes later, when Izaak Avery scored his first goal of the season. Rory Anderson scored the game-winner for Calumet late in the second period on a five-on-three power play. Hancock’s Dawson Kero and Calumet’s Nick Voelker each made 31 saves.

The regional semifinals will be played tomorrow night. The Copper Kings will take on Jeffers at 6:00. Houghton will face L’Anse at 8:00. Our broadcast of both games from the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena will begin around 5:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In girls basketball…
– In the Class D district at Lake Linden, Jeffers raced out to an early lead, and eliminated Ontonagon 50-29. Julia Nordstrom led the Jets with 15 points. Baraga also opened up an early lead, and dispatched Lake Linden-Hubbell 64-45. Casey Mleko had 25 for the Vikings. Alexa Destrampe and Kierstyn Codere each had 16 for the Lakes. Tomorrow night, Jeffers will face Chassell at 5:30. Baraga will meet Dollar Bay at 7:30. Our coverage of both games will begin around 5:10 on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com.
– In the Class C district, Calumet ended Ironwood’s season with a 67-32 victory. Hancock advanced with a 54-43 win over L’Anse. Maija Sebbas scored 31 for the Bulldogs, and passed the 1,000-point mark for her career. The winners will meet for the district title tomorrow night at Calumet.
– In the Class B district, Kingsford advanced with a 40-33 victory over Menominee. Tomorrow, the Flivvers will meet Gladstone. Houghton will open tournament play at Escanaba tomorrow night. We’ll broadcast Houghton’s game on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

In boys regular-season basketball last night…
– Watersmeet defeated Baraga 69-54.
– Bessemer edged Ontonagon 59-57.

On the boys schedule tonight…
– Houghton plays at Calumet.
– Hancock visits L’Anse.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell tips off at Chassell.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City hosts Republic-Michigamme.
– Baraga plays at Jeffers.
– Ewen-Trout Creek welcomes Wakefield-Marenisco.

MTU/NMU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams begin play in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament tonight. Both are seeded fourth. The women’s team will host Ohio Dominican at 5:30, and the men will entertain Wayne State at 7:30.

MTU guard Tommy Lucca has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Year. Lucca also earned a place on the All-GLIAC second team. Last year’s GLIAC Freshman of the Year, Kyle Monroe, was placed on the ALL-GLIAC first team. Jordan Chartier of the Huskies was named to the second team, and to the All-Defense team.

The Northern Michigan University women’s team opens play at Saginaw Valley State tonight. The NMU men’s team did not qualify for the tournament.

Finlandia
The Finlandia baseball team split their doubleheader with Cabrini University yesterday. The Lions lost the first game 7-1, but bounced back to claim the second 8-5. Joey Krug homered for Finlandia in the second game. The Lions will continue their spring visit to Orlando against Lyndon State College of Vermont today.

The Finlandia University softball team is in Clermont, Florida. The Lions will face Concordia College and York College of Pennsylvania this morning.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team has added another player. Jennifer Hernandez currently plays for Fowler High School in Fowler, California.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Portland Trail Blazers this evening. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings play at Vancouver tonight. We’ll join the game after Pistons basketball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers scored eight runs in the eighth inning, and came from behind to defeat the Atlanta Braves 10-7 yesterday. Jordan Zimmerman gave up a run on two hits over two innings in his first start of the spring. Anibal Sanchez struggled through one inning, and gave up three runs on four hits. The Tigers face the New York Yankees this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Texas Rangers 5-0 yesterday. The Brewers will face the Kansas City Royals this afternoon.

Cornhole Tournament
Today is the final day to sign up for the Copper Country Cornhole Tournament. The tournament will be held March 11th at the Bonfire Steakhouse. It’s a fundraiser for local fire departments. The cost is $50.00 to enter a two-person team. You can get details and an entry form on their Facebook Page.
