Changing Lanes At US-41 Construction

June 15, 2017 — Motorists will see a new traffic pattern at the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) US-41 reconstruction project in Hancock beginning June 19.

Beginning Monday, all US-41 (Front Street) traffic will shift to the southbound lanes of the highway, maintaining one lane in each direction on Front Street between the Portage Lake Lift Bridge and Reservation Street. The southbound US-41 connector ramp to eastbound M-26 toward Ripley will be reopened. Work will commence on the northbound lanes of US-41. Northbound US-41 traffic will now cross the median as it exits the lift bridge.

Traffic from Ripley to Houghton will be detoured through Hancock along a posted detour route. Traffic from Hancock to Ripley will now proceed normally. The sidewalk on the north side of US-41 will be closed and the south sidewalk will be reopened.

To reduce bridge operation and limit delays, a 13-foot, 6-inch height restriction for vehicles is being imposed on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge from 7 to 9 a.m. and from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. These restrictions run through July 28. A 12-foot width restriction is also in effect in the work zone.

MDOT is completing the reconstruction of US-41 in Hancock, which began in 2016. In the final phases of the project, MDOT will invest $2 million to reconstruct Front Street between Reservation Street and the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, as well as the southbound US-41 connector ramp to eastbound M-26.
