Copper Country ISD Ranked #1 In The State

The following press release was issued by the Copper Country ISD.

A ranking of the top school districts in Michigan for 2019 was released by BackgroundChecks.org.

The rankings were determined by assessing scholastic and financial metrics, including student-to-teacher ratios, standardized test scores, teacher quality, graduation rate and school funding. Information was gathered from databases at the National Center for Education Statistics and the U.S. Department of Education.

For the state of Michigan, BackgroundChecks.org chose to rank ISDs.  Michigan has 56 ISDs throughout the state.  The Copper Country ISD was ranked number one in the state of Michigan.

While there is a lot of progress to be made in Michigan’s public school system, with its standing among other Midwest states dropping in the past couple decades, it’s not all bad: there are plenty of school districts in the Great Lakes State where things are going well. 

Ranking #1 among Michigan public school districts is the Copper County Intermediate School District, which administers 13 smaller school districts with a total enrollment of around 6,600 students.

Copper Country ISD Superintendent, George Stockero, had this to say about the rankings:

This ranking is for the achievements of all the 13 schools within our ISD. Over the last five years our local schools have received many awards, such as being named “Best High Schools” by U.S. News and World Report, and many schools have beenrecognized as Academic State Champions by Bridge Magazine.  Many local schools have been named a “Reward School” by the Michigan Department of Education for their high level of progress from one year to the next and some schools have received an honor called “Beating the Odds” for out- performing state expectations by MDE. One of our schools received the Hartzog Award recognizing volunteers for the hard work, vast skills, and contributions that lead to development of innovative projects and increased volunteer involvement.  Another one of our schools worked very hard to attain an Advanced Education/National Children’s’ Alliance accreditation. The Copper Country ISD, itself was recognized at a “Gold Level,” the highest possible for developing an infrastructure to support the local schools development of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) by the Michigan Department of Education.  The Copper Country ISD was the only ISD to receive that designation. Finally, many individual teachers have been recognized by various organizations across the country. All in all, the Copper Country has much to be proud of.

I believe there are several reasons why the Copper Country ISD received the number one ranking. Teachers are dedicated to the profession and continue to attend professional development all year long, including the summer, to better their teaching skills.  We have students who truly value their education and work hard to achieve success.  We have parents who are involved in their children’s education, visiting their schools, talking with the teachers, and supporting school programs.  We also have communities that support their schools, even when many community members no longer have children in the schools.

The Copper Country as a whole should be very proud of this recognition.
