COVID-19 update: Delta variant surge continues

In a Thursday night update, the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department says the most recent COVID-19 resurgence is intensifying some from last week. Houghton, Keweenaw, and Baraga Counties have combined for 54 cases in the seven days ending August 18. There was also one death in Baraga County, which stands out as the overall activity there has been quiet. Baraga County was downgraded to the moderate transmission classification on Wednesday.

Keweenaw Report has asked how the roll out of booster vaccinations will work. Chief Medical Officer Kate Beer says those details are still being worked on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said mid-September is the goal during a press conference in Washington, D.C. this week. The formal recommendation is for a booster shot every eight months, pending approval from the Food and Drug Administration.
