Dial Help Hosted Annual Puppy Parade, Closing Out Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The annual Puppy Parade hosted by Dial Help last night rose awareness about sexual assault in our community.

Besides Dial Help, there were also booths from Unite Mental Health and Wellness, Portage Health Foundation, the Hancock Police Department, and the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home.

These booths handed out information regarding their services or information regarding when to use their services. This included information about domestic violence, sexual assault , and mental health services in the area.

Around the lawn, signs were posted so attendees could learn statistics and facts about sexual assault courtesy of the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN).

  • Out of 1000 sexual assaults, 28 cases lead to felony conviction, and only 25 perpetrators will be incarcerated.
  • Out of 1000 sexual assaults, 50 reports lead to arrest
  • 48% of survivors were sleeping or performing another activity at home.
  • Strangers commit 41% of sexual assaults against American Indians.
  • 8/10 rapes are committed by someone known to the survivor.
  • 12% of survivors were sexually assaulted while working.
  • 20% of people who didn’t report to the police feared retaliation.
  • 80,600 inmates were sexually assaulted or raped each year.
  • At least 1 in 6 men have been sexually abused or assaulted (Courtesy of 1in6).

To help survivors who speak up, support and empower the survivor to make their own decisions, and let them know that they are not alone and it’s not their fault.
