Dollar Bay graduation set for Saturday morning

Dollar Bay High School graduation is set for Saturday morning at 10 AM inside the gymnasium. Indoor capacity restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic are still in effect and that means a ticket is required for entry.

Twenty-one students will walk across the aisle with honors distinction, having maintained an overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0. The commencement speaker is Darcie Geenen, a 1998 graduate who got a bachelor’s degree from Michigan Tech in Scientific and Technical Communication and a master’s of Technical Communication at Colorado State University. Geenen currently works for a company that creates educational materials on maintaining healthy rivers. She is an editor at Wildland Hydrology.

Dollar Bay High School will hold its 117th Commencement Ceremonies on Saturday, May 29, at 10 a.m. in the gymnasium of Dollar Bay High School. Tickets required for attendance.

The ceremony will feature Darcie (Frantila) Geenen, 1998 graduate of Dollar Bay High School. Darcie earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Scientific and Technical Communication from Michigan Technological University in 2003, and her Master of Science degree in Technical Communication from Colorado State University in 2006. For the past sixteen years, Darcie has been a technical editor at Wildland Hydrology, a business that restores rivers and teaches professionals how to assess and restore rivers, developing course materials and editing and illustrating their textbooks. Darcie resides in Fort Collins, Colorado with her two children and husband.

The Valedictorian of the Class of 2021 is Molly Nicole Myllyoja. Molly is the daughter of Mark and Patti Myllyoja of Dollar Bay. She is Vice President of the Grace Gaffney Chapter of the National Honor Society, and has been the director of the high school enterprise team, SOAR, for three years. Molly has been a member of the Student Council and the Student Leadership Council, and the Varsity Basketball, Volleyball, Track, Cross Country, and Cheerleading teams, and she was a member of the Dollar Bay High School Band when they achieved the honor of a “1” rating at State Band Festival. She will attend the University of Michigan in the fall to study Engineering.

The Salutatorian is Aubrey Isabelle Swain, daughter of Michelle and Jason Swain of Hancock. She is a member of the Grace Gaffney Chapter of the National Honor Society. Aubrey has competed in High School Quiz Bowl and the Local History Smackdown competition in Calumet, and was a member of the first place winning team her sophomore year. She presented her sophomore and senior years at the Lake Superior Youth Symposium and has been actively involved in the SOAR Enterprise team since her freshman year. She has participated in Varsity Basketball, Volleyball, Track, and Cheerleading. She plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall to major in Human Biology.

Honor students graduating with a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher are Helen Belopavlovich, Craig Berg, Brady Busser, William Carlson, Breanna Datto, Davin Hill, Travis Houle, Theodore Hrabinsky, Angie Jouppe, Lana Korpela, Connor LeClaire, Madalynn Matson, Molly Myllyoja, John Paul Norland, Natalie Nyman, Taylor Pakkala, Dwayne Randell, Claire Rhoades, Cameron Rosenlund, Aubrey Swain, and Claire Torrey.

Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Area Schools is a K-12, family feel district of approximately 330 students, with a teaching staff of 21. Dollar Bay High School is home to 104 9th-12th grade students.
