Final decision on sheriff pushed to September

The three-member panel tasked with appointing a new Houghton County sheriff met Friday, but is not in a rush to complete its mission. Made up of Clerk Jennifer Kelly, Prosecuting Attorney Brittany Bulleit, and Probate Judge Fraser Strome, the group agreed to accept resumes and letters of support for those seeking the post until August 18th.

Kelly says the submissions received will be reviewed a week later.

We are gonna go through the resumes and letters, then decide who we are going to interview, then go through the interview process, and make an appointment.

All letters and resumes should be addressed to the Office of the County Clerk.

A sheriff is a political post, won by election every four years. Kelly says that allows for applicants, and the final selection, to come from outside of a police department or agency if that is the wish of the panel.

You do not have to be a law enforcement officer to become sheriff.

Kevin Coppo continues to serve on an interim basis. He is expected to do so until his title is made permanent or a replacement is chosen. Kelly says the final meeting of the committee won’t be until September.
