Finlandia Softball Sweeps – Friday Sports Wrap

Zimmerman

MLB
Detroit pitchers gave up three home runs and eight walks yesterday, as the Tigers lost to the Minnesota Twins 11-5. Jordan Zimmermann struggled with his control, and was charged with five runs before leaving with two outs in the fifth inning. Anibal Sanchez relieved him, and gave up six more runs over an inning-and-a-third. Miguel Cabrera and Justin Upton each hit their first home runs of the season for the Tigers. Rookie reliever Joe Jiminez made his Detroit debut, pitching a perfect ninth inning.

Jimenez

The Tigers open a series at Cleveland tonight. Daniel Norris will start against Trevor Bauer. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Nelson

After his successful debut, Jimenez was sent back to Toledo. The Tigers filled the spot by purchasing the contract of right-hander William Cuevas from the Mud Hens. Cuevas has been a starter in Toledo, and will be used in long relief situations.

Ryan Braun and Eric Thames homered, as the Milwaukee Brewers shut down the Cincinnati Reds 5-1 last night. Jimmy Nelson pitched seven strong innings, giving up a run on five hits. The Brewers continue that series in Cincinnati tonight. Tommy Milone will pitch against Scott Feldman.

NHL
The Capitals, Predators and Ducks picked up wins in the opening games of their NHL playoff series last night. Tonight, the Rangers face the Canadiens, the Blues take on the Wild, the Blue Jackets play the Penguins, and the Sharks face off against the Oilers. New York, St. Louis, Pittsburgh and San Jose hold 1-0 leads in those series.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team swept its doubleheader at Northland College yesterday, 11-5 and 15-3. Emily Nguyen had three hits and drove in six runs in the opener. The second game was close until the Lions scored 11 runs in the sixth inning. Serena Jaime hit a grand slam.

The Finlandia University baseball team plays a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Superior today.

MTU
The Michigan Tech football team will wrap up its football camp with its annual spring game tomorrow. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The Tech volleyball and men’s basketball teams have each added late recruits for next season. Anna Jonynas will join the volleyball squad. She’s an outside hitter from Orland Park, Illinois. TeeAaron Powell will join the men’s hoops team. He’s 6’9″ tall, and played for Marian Catholic High School in Chicago.

High School
The Houghton, Hancock and Lake Linden-Hubbell softball teams will each play several games at the Superior Dome today and tomorrow.
