Firefighters Still in High Demand throughout the Copper Country

Over the weekend, firefighters from all over the Copper Country gathered at Breakers Beach in Stanton township for the annual volunteer firefighters tournament. The crews all enjoyed some fun and games, built relationships across departments, and enjoyed the firemen ball, but the annual tournament does more than help the departments relax one day a year. The tournament helps build comradery between departments, creating important relationships in the case of a real fire.

Across the Copper Country we’re fortunate to have a number of departments that are very welcoming. That are hosting classes, whether it be on propane tank fires, or with electric vehicles. Because those types of fires are new to us here. And the fact, there are departments in our community that are providing us with that, is a wonderful thing.” – Kyllee Purrii, Stanton Township Fire Department

The amount of training, dedication to the community, and selflessness exemplified by firefighters can be intimidating for an individual considering joining a local department. And while not all crews are the same, many departments throughout the Copper Country are willing to go out of their way to help another town.

The need for firefighters in our community is a great one. It is sometimes a thankless job, we are all volunteers. And it takes up a lot of time, takes time away from your families, and it’s something that is hard to get people to commit too. What they don’t tell you is the community that you gain in joining a fire department. But we encourage people to just come and hang out with us. We have events going on here at the station all of the time. We’re here for our regular business meetings, for training meetings, for pancake breakfasts annually. Just stop by, come say hi, and who knows you might become a part of our family.” – Kyllee Purrii, Stanton Township Fire Department

Kyllee Purrii says that if you see cars parked out front of the station, stop in and talk with them, the department is always willing to help anyone learn more about how to become a firefighter. Below you can find links to contact information for many of the peninsula’s local fire departments.
