Gibson Cup Series Opens Tonight – Friday Sports Wrap

Gibson Cup
The Gibson Cup series opens tonight between the Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines. Game one of the best-of-three set will start at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. Game two will be played tomorrow at the Colosseum. If needed, game three will be played Tuesday at the Dee. Hear all of the games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Fourth-seed Michigan Tech faces top-seed Denver in the opening round of the NCAA hockey tournament tomorrow. Faceoff is at 1:00 at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati. The game will be televised on ESPNews. A watch party for those who can’t make the trip has been scheduled at Fisher 135. Union College and Penn State will meet in the other Midwest Regional semifinal tomorrow evening at 6:00. The championship game will be played Sunday evening at 6:00.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team plays doubleheaders at North Central University today and tomorrow.

The Finlandia baseball team plays a doubleheader at the University of Northwestern tomorrow.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will host the Tampa Bay Lightning this evening.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons play at Orlando tonight.

Verlander

MLB
In spring training baseball, Justin Verlander threw six shutout innings, as the Detroit Tigers fell to the Atlanta Braves 2-1 yesterday. Verlander gave up just two hits, struck out four, and walked none. Nicholas Castellanos homered. The Tigers will face the Braves again this afternoon.

Guerra

Brewers opening-day starter Junior Guerra was rocked for 10 runs before leaving in the fourth inning, and Milwaukee lost 15-5 to the Oakland Athletics yesterday. Guerra gave up 10 hits, including four home runs. The Brewers will play the Cincinnati Reds this afternoon.

NCAA
The University of Michigan’s run in the NCAA Division One men’s basketball tournament ended last night with a 69-68 loss to Oregon. The big surprise yesterday was 11th-seeded Xavier’s 73-71 victory over second-seeded Arizona in the West. Coverage of the tournament continues through the weekend on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
