Gibson Cup up for grabs

One of hockey’s oldest rivalries renews this weekend for one its oldest trophies. The Gibson Cup dates back to 1938. At one point, it was handed out to the winner of the Michigan-Ontario Hockey League. Now it is awarded to the winner of a best-of-three grudge series between the Calumet Wolverines and the Portage Lake Pioneers.

The teams play under NHL rules. Masks are optional, full checking is allowed, and the level of competition is greater than what can be found in a traditional recreational league, says the Wolverines’ Logan Rastello.

Regarding our league, it’s definitely more of a team game. You’re moving up the ice, with passing, working together compared to some of the younger, like high school. They’re racing up the ice, high off the glass, things like that. So, were trying to possess the puck and move as a group.

Game One is Friday night at the Calumet Colosseum, followed by Game Two Saturday at Dee Stadium in Houghton. If needed, Game Three is scheduled for Tuesday night back in Calumet. All contests start at 7:30. Capacity is limited to 375 people for each game. You can hear them live on K-Bear 102.3 FM.
