Giving Tuesday Non-Profit Spotlight: Ontonagon County Cancer Association

The Ontonagon County Cancer Association supports Copper Country residents when facing a tough challenge in their health. Through the association residents affected by cancer can receive financial aid to help with medical expenses, as well as receive check-ups for certain types of cancer. The Ontonagon County Cancer Association started 35 years ago in 1988. Since then awareness of the group has been on the rise, especially since the non-profit began partnering with the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation.

“Copper Shores has done a wonderful job helping us to promote the organization. They are all over social media and help get the word out through the newspaper, podcasts, and interviews. Right now is when a lot of people make their donation, or at least that’s what we are hoping for. The Ontonagon County Cancer Association is just one of those 30 groups taking part in Giving Tuesday. But all of the organizations are worth checking out. And I hope people can make more than one donation. Because they are all working for wonderful causes.
” – Tammy Lancioni–Perrin, Board Member, Ontoangon County Cancer Association

During the past year, the Ontonagon County Cancer Association assisted 54 residents in the area with medical expenses related to their cancer treatment. Adding up to over 75000 dollars in funds dispersed in the county.

1,400 dollars per patient is what we allocate. But then if we have additional funds we will give that money out. And that’s where the 75,000 dollars figure came from this year. So this year it might be more that we can allocate, it depends on how many patients we are working with. If we have more patients dealing with cancer it may be less. So that allocated amount depends on how many people in our area are impacted by cancer and apply for that aid.” – Tammy Lancioni–Perrin, Board Member, Ontoangon County Cancer Association

Giving Tuesday with the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation last year raised over 650,000 dollars from individuals in the community and from friends of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Annually the foundation has provided a match sum to add to the day of giving’s total. Adding up to over 2.7 million dollars spread throughout the copper country over the past six years.
