Great Bear Chase registration cost increases soon

For those interested in participating in this year’s Great Bear Chase cross country ski race, there are a couple of trends to be aware of. Each race has a cap on the size of the field and some of the offerings fill up faster than others. The 50 km classic, as well as the 50 km skiathlon, which combines classic with freestyle, are down to around 50 open slots. Organizers say that those races tend to fill early.

Registration fees are also set to go up once the calendar turns to March. Costs are currently pegged at $80 for the 50 km skiathlon, classic, and freestyle, as well as the 25 km versions. The 10 km races are at $40. Prices increase at midnight on March 1st.

COVID changed procedures last year, but the mass start will be back for each race this year. A virtual option is still a possibility if anyone is not comfortable with being a part of a larger crowd. Registration is free, but perks such as a winter hat and pasty lunch cannot be provided for those doing the race on their own.

UP Health System is the presenting sponsor for the Great Bear Chase, which takes place in the morning on Saturday, March 12th at the Swedetown Trails in Calumet Township.
