Hancock Brings Back Hockey Co-Op, Possibility of Purchasing McAfee Field from Finlandia University

Hancock Public School has rescinded their dissolution of the varsity hockey co-op with Lake Linden Hubbell Schools. Hancock Public Schools Board President, Dale Kero, opened the meeting recognizing the efforts made by parents, players and the community to voice their opinion on the Varsity Hockey Co-Op and prompting the board to reconsider their decision.

Additionally Hancock Public Schools can begin negotiating the purchase of McAfee Field and other equipment with Finlandia University. The Hancock High School football team has played at McAfee Field for many years, while practices often take place nearby the school at the practice field.

The other thing is there are going to be additional cost to that (McAfee) field, if we purchase it. Barbecue I am assuming we’re not going to want the Finlandia University branding on there for a long time. Then, what condition is that turf in? How long is the lifespan on that? Cause if we’re going to buy turf anyway, we may as well put it close rather than down the hill. I’m not against buying the (McAfee) field I’m just saying I think we should look at the cost of building it up here, versus how much it’s going to cost there.” – Michael Lancour, Hancock Public School Board Member

Board member Michael Lancour asked if Superintendent Steve Patchin could access the school’s estimate made a few years back, that considered upgrades to the practice field. As it may aid the district’s decisions while negotiating with Finlandia University on McAfee Field.

Hancock Public Schools have also approved hiring Lori Lewis as a Paraprofessional at Barkell Elementary School. The district will also say goodbye to Sheri Aldrich, who plans to retire from her role as the High School Administrative Assistant.
