Heat forces emergency road repairs

It’s no secret that summer heat was ahead of the calendar this year. While the changing of the seasons officially happened Sunday, roads across parts of the Upper Peninsula have already been subjected to record heat in some cases, with the mercury topping 90 degrees on multiple occasions. That is especially true in the border counties, such as Menominee, Delta, and Dickinson.

On Friday evening, the Michigan Department of Transportation began emergency work to repair heaving in the left westbound lane of US-2 in Norway, just east of Iron Mountain. Extreme temperatures cause pavement to expand past the point allotted. That can result in buckling, especially for older concrete surfaces. Asphalt tends to be more resistant to the condition.

MDOT has not said when they expect repairs to be completed. Moderate temperatures are expected in the short term.
