Hekinpaiva Excitement Building in the Area, Hobby Horse Hoedown Returns on Friday

Heikki Lunta blew in more snow to the Keweenaw Peninsula over the weekend. Adding another 29 inches of snowfall to the season in Keweenaw County between Friday and Sunday. Which will certainly help Hancock prepare for Heikinpaiva later this month. But before the festival on the 27th, there are still a few more community events to help the Copper Country get excited to celebrate winter and Finnish heritage.

“In Finland, for some reason, especially young women. They treat these hobby horses like they are real horses. They have very serious competitions. And it’s just a query part of contemporary Finnish culture. And it was brought here. In part with the efforts of Ginger Alberti from Sew Cranky. And there are a variety of them that are available for people who attend the Hobby Horse Hoedown. And the Hobby Horse Hoedown has become a combination of two things, the Hobby Horses, and Family Fun Night. Which has been going on for a long, long time.” Jim Kurtti, President, Finnish Theme Committee

Many spots for Finnish enrichment classes with the Finnish folk school have filled up. However, the Hobby Horse Hoedown and Snowflake Challenge are both still available to those excited about Heikinpaiva. The hobby horse hoedown on Friday will begin at 6 pm at the Finnish American Heritage Center. Please contact the Kivajat dancers for more event details. The Hobby Horse Hoedown will cost families five dollars at the door. Find more Heikinpaiva event details here. Below are listed events taking place this week.
