Honors fraternity inducts new members

Gogebic Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter held an induction ceremony for 28 new members Monday. Under normal circumstances, in-person events are hosted at the school’s Ironwood and Portage Township locations, but this year’s festivities were done virtually.

Phi Theta Kappa is a national honors fraternity, requiring a GPA of 3.5 for at least 12 credits of coursework. The GCC chapter, Alpha Rho Chi, is growing quickly. Advisor Dayle Jackson says the class is a big one.

We were really happy with the numbers we had this year. We had 28 coming in, we’re currently sitting close to 65 students total in our PTK program with our induction from last year and the ones enrolled again this year, so yeah, it was actually a really good year for us.

There are several perks to being a member of the group, especially the scholarship opportunities available for students who transfer into a four-year university to continue their schooling. The Class of 2021, including 14 students from Houghton, Keweenaw, and Baraga Counties is presented below.

Gogebic Community College’s Alpha Rho Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa hosted a virtual induction ceremony Monday, April 26, 2021. Twenty-eight members were inducted. Students must achieve a 3.5 grade point on at least twelve earned credit hours to be eligible for membership.

The Alpha Rho Chi Chapter Advisor is Dayle Jackson, Director of Student Outreach and Engagement at GCC. “The students who were inducted today have worked very hard to earn the opportunity to join Phi Theta Kappa. In an exceptional year, they achieved academic excellence and we’re extremely proud of each of them!” Jackson said.

The Alpha Rho Chi chapter at GCC earned a Chapter Milestone award this past year, and is also recognized as a REACH chapter, a designation earned for the high number of students that join the chapter.

The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges in 1929. Phi Theta Kappa has a presence on almost 1,300 community colleges in 11 nations. Scholarships totaling more than $36 million are offered annually to Phi Theta Kappa students. More than 3.5 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 250,000 active members today.
