Houghton County Sells Former 911 Tower to Torch Lake Federal Credit Union for $300K

Houghton County and the Torch Lake Federal Credit Union will close the sale of the 911 Tower Building in about one week. Torch Lake Federal Credit Union has been in negotiations with the county to purchase the former 911 tower site for several months. The credit union has agreed to purchase the location from Houghton County for 300,000 dollars. Commission Chairman Tom Tikkanen says that the sale between the two entities is mutually beneficial.

“Number one, it will go one hundred percent back into the 911 fund. It was a very good collaborative effort from a number of our departments to get this property ready for purchase. And we’ve gotten that high-tech equipment moved over to the other tower. A big upgrade and improvement of services in that regard.” – Tom Tikkanen, Chairman, Houghton County Commission

Commissioner Joel Keranen abstained from voting on the final sale agreement. He is a member of the credit union and a former member of the credit union’s board of directors. The board thanked Commissioner Janssen and Chairman Tikkanen for their work on the sale, as well as County Administrator Ben Larson for his efforts.
