Houghton County Sheriff provides update on Calumet fire

In a Thursday night release, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office has updated the number of people displaced by Calumet’s Fifth Street fire to 41. The Salvation Army’s Bread of Life Center in Hancock is coordinating relief for those residents and has begun to contact landlords throughout northern Houghton County and select villages in Keweenaw County to find new living arrangements.

The department is reiterating that people should avoid the scene of the fire and refrain from taking any items or bricks, boards, or other pieces of the three buildings that were lost.

Right now there are multiple investigations ongoing from the Sheriff’s Office, the Michigan State Police Fire Marshall, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The ATF is a federal agency and is part of the Department of Justice.
