Houghton’s Strong Medals at UP Golf Tourney – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
In golf yesterday, Houghton’s Ben Strong took the individual title at the boys Division One championship at the Marquette Heritage course. His 73 was two strokes better than Evan Kramer from Menominee. The Gremlins finished fourth in the team competition. Calumet placed sixth. In the girls Division One championship at Chocolay, Houghton’s Kaaren Liston finished second overall, two strokes behind Escanaba’s Paxton Johnson. The Gremlins placed second in the team competition, 18 strokes behind Escanaba.

The boys and girls UP Division Two championships will be played at the George Young Golf Course in Iron River today. Hancock, Lake Linden-Hubbell, and Jeffers will compete. The boys and girls UP Division Three championships will take place at Irish Oaks in Gladstone. Chassell, Dollar Bay, and Ontonagon will take part.

In softball, Calumet will face Negaunee in the Division Three District tournament at Negaunee this afternoon at 4:00. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Detroit Tigers overcame an early deficit, and held on to edge the Kansas City Royals 6-5 last night. KC opened the scoring with three runs off Matthew Boyd in the first inning. Detroit’s comeback began with a Victor Martinez solo home run in the second. Two-run doubles by J.D. Martinez and Justin Upton gave Detroit the lead in the third inning, and Alex Avila’s solo homer in the fourth was the eventual game-winner. Boyd didn’t make it through the fourth inning. Warwick Saupold earned the win with three strong innings of relief, and Justin Wilson got the save.

The Tigers have today off, and host the Chicago White Sox tomorrow night. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Derek Holland. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Guerra

Upton left the game after that third-inning double with what’s being described as mild left quad strain. Team officials don’t think it’s a serious injury.

Eric Thames and Keon Broxton homered, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the New York Mets 7-1 last night. Junior Guerra threw six shutout innings to get the win.

The Brewers conclude that series against the Mets in New York this afternoon. Chase Anderson will start against Zack Wheeler.

Finlandia
Two Finlandia University softball players have been named to the FastPitch News NCAA Division III Softball All-American team. Emily Nguyen was placed on the second team offense, and Denia Bent  made honorable mention offense.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Nashville Predators 4-1 last night. Pittsburgh leads the Stanley Cup final two games to none.

NBA
The NBA championship series opens tonight, as the Golden State Warriors host the Cleveland Cavaliers.

MTU Women’s Basketball Golf Tourney
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball program will host their annual golf tournament at the Portage Lake Golf Course on Saturday, June 10th. Registration for the tournament starts at 9:00, with a 10:00 shotgun start. The registration deadline is tomorrow. For full details, link to the tournament brochure here.
