UPDATE: House fire on College Avenue, no injuries

Firefighters battled a blaze at a Houghton home for hours Sunday evening, closing College Avenue in both directions. The residence is tucked between Franklin Square and Prospect Street, which was also shut down. Houghton Fire Chief Mike Reynolds says the fire is believed to have started in the kitchen area. The department got a call at around 5:30 and spent four hours on scene.

Reynolds says Mercy EMS and Hurontown Fire provided assistance at the home. Roughly 35 people in total worked to get the fire under control. Reynolds says the owner has multiple properties and this was not his primary residence. No one was hurt. The inside was a bit of a mess though, and caused problems for firefighters.

We actually tried to do an interior attack but there was too much clutter in the house. We couldn’t get in.

They had to rely solely on attacking the blaze from the exterior of the residence, including via ladder truck from above. Reynolds says the home is likely a total loss.
