John Christianson honored by Houghton-Portage Township School Board

At Monday’s Houghton-Portage Township Board of Education meeting, the long, distinguished career of John Christianson was honored. John Christianson was awarded the 2021 Outstanding Education Employee Award. President Nels Christopherson talked about Christianson’s contributions to the district.

I’m gonna mention two numbers without a big, long speech. The first is 38…years of teaching in our district. The other one is a close second. 31…years he was our volleyball coach with many, many successful seasons.

Christianson was accompanied by his daughter and grandson to share the moment.

Budgetary matters were also on the agenda. With money still remaining from COVID-19 relief aid, the district must use the funds before July 1st. The board decided to reward employees for their stellar performance in a chaotic year. It granted a hazard pay bonus in the amount of $1,000 for all full-time staffers.

The board also approved a contract with the district’s teachers for 2021-22 as negotiated with the Michigan Education Association union.
