Keweenaw sheriff hosting mental health presentation

Thursday night at the courthouse in Eagle River, Keweenaw County Sheriff Curt Pennala will host a panel discussing mental health. The Stomp Out The Stigma event will be moderated by Dr. Michelle Morgan, a psychiatrist formerly with Copper County Mental Health.

Area agencies are expected to be in attendance, and some conversation could surround the creation of a new resource aimed at being more proactive in the fight against mental illness. The event is meant to be a catalyst for change, and has grown out of a Facebook post earlier this year by Sheriff Pennala. He expressed frustration at the limited steps available to help those who are obviously struggling, and potentially crying out for help through their actions.

Pennala says this is a regional effort, and other nearby counties will be participating Thursday.

I know both Houghton and Baraga County are sending people up here to attend, and possibly sit on the panel, so they’re aware of it.

Scheduled right before Memorial Day, Pennala hopes to attract a larger audience and has heard from out-of-town media outlets that they intend to cover it while vacationing in the Keweenaw. You can participate in person beginning at 6:30 PM or through Zoom.
