Lakes Outlast Eagles – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football Saturday…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell survived a late Stephenson comeback attempt, and earned a 34-30 homecoming victory at Warner Field. The Eagles grabbed an early advantage, with quarterback Canaan Elson completing a nearly eight-minute opening drive with a one-yard plunge. The two-point conversion attempt failed. The Lakes responded with a 14-yard Danny Marcotte touchdown run and a successful two-point conversion, and a 35-yard scoring toss from Marcotte to Marcus Sutherland. That two-point attempt failed. A 58-yard touchdown pass by Elson tightened the score, but a failed two-point attempt left the Lakes with a 14-12 advantage. After Marcotte left the game with an injury, backup quarterback Travis Ongie raced 58 yards for a Lakes score. The two-point conversion succeeded. The Eagles kept pace with a 50-yard Elson TD pass, but Ongie’s one-yard plunge in the final minute of the second quarter boosted the Lakes to a 28-18 halftime advantage. Ongie also left the game with an injury in the third quarter, and Sam Roberts extended the Lake Linden lead to 34-18 with a nine-yard run. Stephenson’s comeback began with Elson’s third touchdown pass of the afternoon – a 38-yarder to Chris Schmidt late in the third quarter. The two-point attempt failed. The Eagles closed the gap even tighter when Ethan Anderson grabbed a lateral toss with 2:21 to go, and raced 82 yards for a score. Again, their two-point conversion failed. Stephenson’s late final drive ended when Mason Holzberger intercepted an Elson pass at the Lakes’ one-yard line with 48 seconds remaining, and Lake Linden was able to run out the clock. Lake Linden converted two of five two-point attempts. Stephenson made none, resulting in the four-point scoring differential.

Lake Linden will play Carney-Nadeau next week at the North Central field in Powers. Coverage will begin at 1:40 on KBear 102.3.
