Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly Preparing to Serve Over 1,000 Seniors During Thanksgiving

Later today more than 600 pounds of turkeys will arrive in Hancock at the Little Brother’s Friends of the Elderly. Some of the turkeys will be delivered to Marquette as well for next week’s LBFE Thanksgiving Meal Congregate sites. During the dinner, Little Brother’s hundreds of volunteers will serve more than 1,000 seniors in the region a full-course Thanksgiving dinner with all of the fixings.

“It’s always all about friendship and companionship. We love our elders. We the to be with somebody on Thanksgiving. We don’t want them to be alone. And this is just one of the seven core programs that we offer to them. And it’s a big one. And it’s probably the most enjoyable for us to all get together and enjoy a nice hot meal.” – Gail Ross, Communications Coordinator, Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly

Congregate meal sites during the year include the same feeling of friendship and communion as Thanksgiving meal locations. But during the holidays seniors seem to enjoy the time spent with others a little more. During Thanksgiving and holiday seasons many people tend to do a little more volunteering in their community. And Little Brothers will need more hands to do less work in the kitchen.

“We just to give you an idea we cook over 700 pounds of turkey. And we serve over 1,100 people. But for one of our larger sites, we’ll send 55 pounds of potatoes. So that’s  55 pounds of sweet and regular white potatoes. So these are fun things volunteers can do if you like peeling potatoes and solving the world’s problems. This job is for you.” – Gail Ross, Communications Coordinator, Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly

Seniors and volunteers who are interested in joining Little Brothers and Friends of the Elderly on Thanksgiving should contact their Hancock office to inform them of your attendance. Or to determine where your help will have the best impact on seniors enjoying the holiday. Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly can be reached by phone at 906 482 6944.
