Michigan gas prices spike to new highs

The Copper Country has it pretty good at the gas pump, at least compared to the rest of the state. AAA Michigan says Metro Detroit is shelling out a whopping $3.28 per gallon for regular unleaded. Marquette, the nearest market, is at $3.13 and Traverse City is best at $3.06 per gallon.

Prices ran up last week due to the Fourth of July holiday, one of the busiest travel times of the year. AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland says, “Gas prices rose last week as more than 1.4 million Michigan residents were expected to hit the road for the Independence Day holiday. After the sharp spike, motorists will likely see prices stabilize through this week.”

Gas prices are $1.03 more expensive per gallon than at this time last year. Oil prices are trading near yearly highs, suggesting that there is no relief on the way yet.
