Michigan hits first vaccine milestone

Fifty-five percent of eligible Michiganders have received at least the first dose of their COVID-19 vaccine, reaching the initial benchmark in Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s reopening plan. That comes as the Department of Health and Human Services takes into account those who got their shots in other states. That could be retirees in Florida, or those who crossed the border into Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

Passing the threshold allows for companies to bring people back to the office, even those who have successfully completed their duties from home. Vaccine effectiveness is locked in after two weeks, so a similar delay is imposed on the lifting of the restrictions. Michiganders can gather around the water cooler again on May 24th.

Two weeks after 60 percent is reached, curfews on bars and restaurants are lifted and capacity increases at indoor sports stadiums, gyms, and other locations deemed high risk for transmission. The pace of vaccinations has slowed significantly in Michigan, a trend seen across the country.
