National Voter Registration Day event at Michigan Tech

Houghton County Clerk Jennifer Kelly hosted a voter registration drive at Michigan Tech Tuesday afternoon. The need for such an event is not what it once was as the state now automatically signs residents up when they get their driver’s license. Kelly says it takes effort to stay off the rolls.

We’re an automatic registering state now with the driver’s license. The only time it doesn’t happen is if people say no, they don’t want to register.

For those who still slip through the cracks, Kelly says that her office can help register voters in Houghton County or as absentee voters back home.

The Reapportionment Committee meets Wednesday afternoon to draw maps for elections through 2030, followed by a special session for the County Board of Commissioners. The group will consider the budget slated to take effect on October 1st and look at nominees for the open administrator position. Applications for the job will still be accepted until the county offices close this afternoon.
