One Person Taken into Protective Custody After a Mental Health Crisis on Sunday

One person was taken into protective custody in Portage Township on Sunday.

Michigan State Police report that troopers responded Sunday around 2:30 pm to a report of an armed male individual suffering a mental health crisis. MSP reports that one woman and two minors were also inside the home at the time of the incident. The man had barricaded himself inside a room. Police escorted the woman and minors from the building to a safe location. While other officers established contact with the male individual. After a short time, the man exited the residence without incident and was taken into protective custody.

He was transported to UPHS Portage Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Officials report no one was injured during the incident. Michigan State Police were assisted by the Houghton County Sheriff, Houghton Police, Hancock Police, and Michigan Tech Public Safety.
