Painesdale Mine & Shaft Now A Keweenaw Heritage Site

The Painesdale Mine & Shaft was just recognized as a Keweenaw Heritage Site. The #4 Shaft House, built in 1902, was part of the Copper Range Mining Company.

Adams Township still uses the site to pump water for the surrounding towns and cities, including the city of Hancock.

The organization has opened the upper levels of the shaft house for tours this summer. The Painesdale Mine is sealed, so the experience will take advantage of the upper levels to show how rocks were crushed and loaded onto trains.

There will be a guided tour on Saturdays.

Find more information about the site on their website.
