High School

In high school softball today…
– Calumet entertains Gwinn
– Jeffers faces Hancock.

In baseball today, Calumet will play at Jeffers. The site was changed from the original schedule because of field conditions.

Tomorrow, Calumet plays at Gladstone.

In track today…
– Calumet, Houghton and L’Anse will compete at the Ontonagon Invitational.
– Other local teams will run at the Lakes Invitational at Lake Linden.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University softball team begins play at the American Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament in Alfred, New York, tomorrow. The second-seeded Lions will face third-seed Alfred State at 1:00 in the first game of the double-elimination event. We’ll broadcast all of the Lions tournament games on 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions baseball team plays doubleheaders at Wisconsin-LaCrosse today and tomorrow.

MTU

Former Houghton High School star Elisa Jurmu has been named assistant coach of the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team. Jurmu played four seasons for the Huskies, and was on the staff as an interim assistant last season. That position has now been made permanent.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a home set against the Kansas City Royals tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Jorge López. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Freddy Peralta was rocked in his return from the disabled list, as the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Colorado Rockies 11-6 yesterday. Peralta gave up nine runs through four innings. Ryan Braun homered for the Crew.

The Brewers open a home series against the new York Mets tonight. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Steven Matz.

NHL

In the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs last night…
– The Boston Bruins defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1. That series is tied 2-2.
– The Colorado Avalanche blanked the San Jose Sharks 3-0. That set is tied 2-2.

Tonight…
– The Carolina Hurricanes host the New York Islanders. The Hurricanes are up 3-0 in that series.
– The Dallas Stars visit the Saint Louis Blues. That set is tied 2-2.

Detroit Red Wings Hall-Of-Famer Red Kelly has died. Kelly’s number-four jersey was retired by the Wings in February. He played 13 seasons in Detroit, won the first-ever Norris Trophy in 1954, and was a four-time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy as the most gentlemanly player in the league. Kelly also served in the Canadian Parliament while playing in his final seasons as a Maple Leaf. Leonard Patrick “Red” Kelly was 91.

NBA

In NBA playoff action last night, the Philadelphia 76ers downed the Toronto Raptors 116-95. Philly leads that series 2-1.

Tonight…
– The Milwaukee Bucks visit the Boston Celtics. That series is tied 1-1.
– The Portland Trail Blazers host the Denver Nuggets. That set is tied 1-1.
