Pistons Routed by Cavaliers – Wednesday Sports Wrap

Gould

MTU
Michigan Tech hockey player Gavin Gould has been named Rookie of the Week by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Gould scored four goals, as the Huskies defeated Minnesota State two games to one in the tournament semifinals last weekend. Tech will host Bowling Green in the WCHA championship game Saturday night at the SDC.

The Huskies were shut out of the major season awards announced yesterday by the WCHA. Bemidji State goalie Michael Bitzer was named Player of the Year, and Beavers coach Tom Serratore was named Coach of the Year. Minnesota State took the other top honors – Daniel Brickley was named Defensive Player of the Year, and Marc Michaelis was named Rookie of the Year.

NMU
Northern Michigan University hockey standout Dominick Shine has found a place in the Detroit Red Wings’ system. Shine signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Finlandia University
The Finlandia University softball team is in St. Paul for the Cobber Classic indoor tournament. The Lions have games against Concordia College this morning, and Bethany Lutheran College this afternoon.

NBA
The Cleveland Cavaliers sank their first 10 three-point shots, and buried the Detroit Pistons 128-96 last night. The Cavaliers reeled off 60 points in the game’s first 16 minutes. Tobias Harris led Detroit with 17 points. The Pistons will host the Utah Jazz tonight.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will skate at Colorado tonight.

NCAA
The NCAA Division One men’s basketball tournament opened last night. Kansas State and Mount St. Mary’s advanced from the First Four to the field of 64. The other two First Four games will be played this evening. Listen for coverage on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Boyd

MLB
Matt Boyd pitched five scoreless innings, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Miami Marlins 7-1 yesterday. Justin Upton homered. The Tigers will face the Atlanta Braves this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs played to a 7-7 tie yesterday. Zach Davies struggled for Milwaukee, giving up single runs in the first and second innings, and four in the third. Eric Thames hit his first home run of the spring. The Brewers will face the Colorado Rockies this afternoon.
