Portage Twp Man Killed In Auto Accident

A Portage Township man is dead following an accident Friday afternoon.

Deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident around 2:30pm on Boundary Road in Portage Township.

Authorities say 59-year-old Steven Long overcorrected his vehicle coming back onto the road after his passenger tires went off the road.

The vehicle traveled across the road and then went into a ditch for about 15 feet before striking a culvert.

The vehicle bounced over the driveway and traveled through a residential yard for about 75 feet before striking a large tree in the yard.

There was significant damage to the vehicle and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the accident.

The driver was extricated from the vehicle by Hurontown Fire and Rescue with the Jaws of Life.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Houghton City Police, the Hurontown Fire Department, Mercy Ambulance, and Superior Service Towing.
