Rep. Bergman: Afghanistan a “national embarrassment”

Congressman Jack Bergman isn’t mincing words when discussing the current chaos unfolding in Afghanistan. In a matter of days, the country’s leadership went into exile, the army collapsed, and now perhaps over 10,000 Americans are trapped behind Taliban lines. Bergman says the situation is worse than Saigon in 1975, as the scale is much greater.

Bergman says the United States military needs to get back to basics.

The Defense Department pretty much has been defocused for the oh, lets say year or so, with things like Critical Race Theory and gender assignment surgery. The Department of Defense has one role, and that is to defend the borders of the United States, and to keep our citizens safe and secure.

Bergman will be in Washington, D.C. next week working on the National Defense Authorization Act. He says that given recent events, the negotiations could be intriguing.

So it’s going to be interesting to see in the markup to see where we are on support for some of these, what I would call not only nonessential, but basically wasteful programs, within the Department of Defense budget that says, “No. We’re into defense. We’re not into social science, we’re not into experiments. That’s not what the Department of Defense does.”

Bergman stopped short of demanding a full house cleaning at the top. The congressman is the highest ranking Marine to serve in Congress. This subject is something he is intimately knowledgeable about.
