Rodriguez

MLB
Francisco Rodríguez gave up the winning run in the ninth inning, as the Detroit Tigers fell to the Seattle Mariners 2-1 yesterday. The RBI single by Ben Gamel spoiled an excellent start by Justin Verlander, who gave up a run on five hits over seven innings. He struck out eight. Tyler Collins had three of Detroit’s four hits, including a pair of doubles, and scored the Tigers’ only run.

Iglesias

The Tigers entertain the Chicago White Sox tonight. Matthew Boyd will pitch against former Tiger Mike Pelfrey. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Tigers got one of their wounded starters back last night. Shortstop José Iglesias returned, after a stint on the seven-day concussion list. Reliever Kyle Ryan was sent to Toledo to make room.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and host the Atlanta Braves tonight. Chase Anderson will start against Bartolo Colón.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team will wrap up its season with doubleheaders at Maranatha Baptist University today and tomorrow.

MTU
Cayman Berg-Morales and John Williams will serve as co-captains of the Michigan Tech football team next fall. Both will be seniors. Williams was the Huskies’ leading rusher last season, and Berg-Morales is a defensive lineman. Two additional co-captains will be named during fall practice, as Tech prepares for its first season under Head Coach Steve Olson.

High School
The entire high school sports schedule was wiped out by the weather yesterday, and may be again today. We have already been told that the Calumet baseball game at Hancock has been postponed. No makeup date has been announced.

The Packers traded out of the first round, sending the 29th overall pick to the Cleveland Browns. In exchange, Green Bay gets the 33rd overall pick, and a fourth-round selection.

The Browns opened the draft by selecting Texas A and M defensive end Myles Garrett. The Bears traded up to the second position, and took North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

Rounds two and three of the draft will be held today.  The Lions have the 21st pick in each round. The Packers will open the second round with the pick they got from the Browns, and also have the 29th picks in each round. The final rounds of the draft will be held tomorrow.
